This is a talk (ok, a long talk, ~30 minutes) about whether Google's Book Search project -- called "massive copyright infringement" by the American Association of Publishers, is "fair use"? It is.

so AAP is the association of american publishers, not the American association of Publishers as you described.

Clear, concise. Keep fighting for us, Lessig.

I like google book search and believe it is fair use. However, the thumbnail example is not exactly the same as what google does. Though end-users see a 'thumbnail' or 'transformation' of the book, google has copied the entire work to its personal servers. In the case of the thumbnails, only the transformation was stored on the engine's servers.

I really wonder how itunes and Imeem managed to preview copyrighted work for 30secs for each song (which is much more than 10% of original content) got away and Google is being sued. Copyright laws nowadays are so strict that things are not getting into public domain.

some obviously absorb little of this, based on comments. It's truly excellent. Thank you for your efforts to bring it to the web. Your presention is one that many companies should consider hiring. Quite pleasant in it's presentation.
